José María Lozano is born in the Galician city of Ourense (Spain). He studied psychology at the University Complutense of Madrid. At the same time, develops an intense activity as a guitarist, composer, and singer of American folk music, bluegrass and later acoustic jazz. From 1976-1983 he combines the activity of children's fashion designer with advertising.


After studying the construction of the Spanish classical guitar with Maestro Evelio Dominguez in Madrid, learn the technical basis of the restoration with Master Nash Mondragon of San Francisco (USA), first student of famed restorer Hans Weisshaar in Los Angeles. In 1985 he began working in Madrid as professional luthier, opening to the public a study of construction and restoration of violins, violas and cellos. During the first decade of work, too, in the restoration and tuning of basses.


Between 1990 and 1996, deepens in the construction technique of violins, violas and cellos by the great master luthier PierAngelo Balzarini of Cremona (Italy). His instruments have been praised by international concert artists so renowned as Tabea Zimmermann, Janos Starker, Ivry Gitlis, Arto Noras, Atar Arad, Boris Pergamenschikow, Michael Strauss, Tokyo Quartet, Asier Polo, Nicolaj Zneider, Dimitar Furnadjeiev, Victor Martin, etc.

José María Lozano has carried out different restorations in historic instruments : Stradivari, Guarneri del Jesù, Montagnana, Guadagnini, Guarneri family, Gagliano family, Ruggeri, Rogeri, Storioni, Tononi, Teckler, Vuillaume, Lupot, Contreras, Guillamí, etc. He has worked for soloists as Zahar Bron, Lorand Fenives, Mauricio Fuks, Mikhail khomitzer, Boris Pergamenshikov, Mithail Ovrutsky, Dimitar Furnadjeiev, Uto Hugi, Victor Martin, Cristine Waleska, Natalia Gutman, José Luis García Asensio, Nicolaj Zneider, Asier Polo, Santiago Juan, Agustín León Ara, Simon Veis, Julia Malkova, Vlad Stanculeasa, Lorenz Nasturica, Giovanni Fabris,etc.


It also develops an important pedagogical activity providing advice and advanced courses for masters luthiers . Contributes to the formation of more than forty students of various nationalities: Barbara Mayer, Santiago Pardo, G. In 2000, José María Lozano participated as jury member at the Concurso Internacional de Construcción de Guitarra Clásica " Maestro J. Rodrigo" de Aranjuez (Spain). He has carried out the valuation of instruments of arc of teachers of Madrid Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Community of Madrid and is often invited to give lectures and master classes. From the year 1985, José María Lozano develops a deep work of investigation, based on the acoustics of the wood, the study and analysis of primers, varnishes and coloring matters and pigmentary of the classic Italian school. From 1994 to 2005, collaborates with the Doctor in Chemistry Roman Martinez Gayol in the development of a specific bio stabilization and accelerated aging of the wood This treatment has been contrasted with excellent results by the Consejo Superior de Incestigaciones Científicas - CSIC- at the National Institute of Physics Lopez Quevedo - Madrid. After several years of study and research, develops a process of external coloring for wood that potency positively their acoustic qualities This process is known as "Italian Golden Ground" OLD WOOD and currently is successfully used for many luthiers from around the world.
